San Michele’s hill, where our winery is located, is surmounted by a charming Romanesque Church called San Micheletto. The vineyard, located at the base of the Church, is our Cru from which we produce Valpolicella Superiore DOC and, in its most ancient portion, San Michele della Chiesa. This vineyard, if we were in Burgundy, would be called a linux dit. In fact, this vineyard was even cited in Ottone da Bure’s will, dating back to March 10th, 1286. He, in fact, decided to legate to a not better specified work, always accordingly with the Church’s decorum, a piece of the field with vineyards. (Cit.Giuliano Sala).
The origin of our logo comes from a Church’s fresco.
The logo which distinguishes our product’s line, refers to the lilies decorating Saint Catherine of Alexandria, in San Micheletto’s Church. The face of the Alexandria’s Saint suggests the vast diffusion of this belief, more or less omnipresent during the two-three hundreds in churches around Verona.
San Micheletto arises from the ancient walls of Moteclum
The Romanesque Church of San Micheletto of Bure was built inside the castrum Monteclum, later called castrum Burarum. Through documentation found in archives and the analysis of the buildings, it is possible to reconstruct the institutional and construction circumstances. The Church belongs to the XII century and inside it holds frescoes dating back to the XIII and XV century; with interventions until the XVIII century. Although it was never a parish, many rectors have often officiated it while being supported at first by the Da Bure’s family and then by the Montanari. (Cit. Brugnoli)
Is it possible to visit it?
The San Micheletto’s Church today is a part of a private property and, according to the Ministry of Cultural Heritageon the fist Monday of every month from 10.00 to 12.00 a.m. and on Saturdays and Sundays from 10.00 to 12.00 a.m. and from 3.00 to 6.00 p.m. (August excluded).
